I have created a landscape in 3ds max, and going to model a wolf, so it looks similar to the scale model I have made before, and I am going to compare how realistic are both of them by create a short video clip.

The techniques I have used in the videos above, which shows the 3d model can be filmed in different angles, and also even a clay model can be animate by using stop motion technique. If I've using more frames for the stop motion, the animation would become more smoothly.

I was thinking to do another green screen technique, but because the equipments all lent out so I have decided to use different method to create same effect.

Here is my two experiments:

First one is using video camera to film the environment I have model and the wolf to create a realistic scene.

Secondly, I have used a stop motion technique, which can create the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence, and that could make a physically object appear to move on its own.

I have used acrylics to paint on glass.

I was planning to do city site, but then I recognised I run out of time, so I decided to do a landscape one with unrealistic sky.

Here is my painting. Tomorrow I will do the filming part. Hopefully, will upload everything by Friday.

Artefact 3- Digital Matte Painting

For my third artefact, Ive decided to do a digital matte painting.

A matte painting is a painted representation of a landscape, set, or distant location that allows filmmakers to create the illusion of an environment that would otherwise be too expensive or impossible to build or visit.

Compare the digital matte painting and the original matte painting.

Traditionally, matte paintings were made by artists using paints or pastels on large sheets of glass for integrating with the live-action footage. The first known matte painting shot was made in 1907 by Norman Dawn (ASC)

By the mid-1980s, advancements in computer graphics programs allowed matte painters to work in the digital realm.
The first digital matte shot was created by painter Chris Evans in 1985 for Young Sherlock Holmes for a scene featuring a computer-graphics (CG) animation of a knight leaping from a stained-glass window. Evans first painted the window in acrylics, then scanned the painting into LucasFilm’s Pixar system for further digital manipulation. The computer animation (another first) blended perfectly with the digital matte, something a traditional matte painting could not have accomplished.

Throughout the 1990s, traditional matte paintings were still in use, but more often in conjunction with digital compositing.

Artefact 2- Updated!

First experiment wasnt too relevant on this research, so I have decided to create some 3d objects with lighting and showing how important with shadow and without a shadow on the object.

I have created a lamp , glass with water and a key. I have created a lamp because I want to add spot lights into the scene, so the light directly point at the object, that could help me to get the effect I want.

I have saved as an image, and quickly ask 20 people to spot out which image is most realistic to them and why.

All 20 people are saying the image have shadow looks the most realistic.
They said the second reason of realistic is the material affect the overall viewing.

The next artefact I will carry out a short movie clip include everything I have learned in previous artefacts.

This week my client has giving me feedback on the items I did for them last week.
Overall is good and they are impressed. Just a couple things I need to improve on is the textures and the limitation of triangle I used in the item.

NOW I have Improved the work and just sent the items back to my client.

At the moment, Im happy with my client project. haha, but not sure about others one. =.=!!

Recently, I have been sorting out the proposal and finally, just sorted out. Hopefully, when it starts, it follows the plan Ive got now.
And yeh~ Thats about it.

Outline the work

3 batches of 3 items each week. ( total of nine items )
Demonstration at the end ( create 20 sec movie clip for each item + a little bit of animation )

Artfact 1 - Update!

I have done another photorelistic scotter render using 3ds max.
This time, I am using the same method with different model, and different background.

As you can see there are several images above, if you could notice there are slightly changes on each of them. The lighting and shadow of the scotters.

After Ive done the image, I have asked few people to give comments on it. I asked them to spot out which one is the most realistic. Everyone have their answer slightly different. Some people think the first image is the most realistic, and some don't.

I think the most important elements to produce this work is to use the right materials. Secondly, is the lighting, the way you put the lights is important because it gives shadows and highlight the car.

Lastly, to make it even more realistic. We probably need to put it into photoshop and do abit of editing.

I have used a pre-made model and find a good HDRI image. I have loaded up my background image and make sure the car position is right.
The next step, will be the most important. I will put camera in, and add lights into the scene.
The difficuities are have to match the lights with the background.

Ive seen this from another blogger. Im searching around to see different type of videos...and how they give information to audience, the techniques they used and so on. The one below, I found it quite attractive and it could drag your attention about the subject / topic it is about. I really like the sound and the way they giving information to audience is very clear, and make the audience easy to understand by giving a sentence in each plot. Not alot but clear and easy to understand.^^

After few rendering, I have picked this one for my final work, I have showed this to my tutor today. There are some improvement need to be make, such as the font of the texts, they are not really clear when it plays. May need to change the first shot where the guy is walking toward to the camera, because at this moment, there are some unnecessary shots. other than these , it goes fine. Im so pleased with this.^^

Hopefully, it does bring the message to people.

Animation stage 2

After I read da book called 3d toons by steve and rafanzovin. I finally came up with ideas.

Mainly is about Puppet. Ive seached other art pieces, which helps me to develop more.

I would like to do something similar to this, as i could animate the doll and the arm to produce my own piece of work. To make it more interesting, I could add music at the back, then the doll follow the bits.

I have also researched the 2d animation, and I found this is the most interesting piece of work. The story of it is so good. I like the act of characters and his emotions.

I went to London on the 12th Jan,09 with other year groups. It took 3 hours to travel to London From Nottingham. Firstly I went to Serpentine Gallery. It has loads of indian style art pieces.

Then We travelled around as a group

We chose to go to Tate gallery

We looked at the works until night.
there are some nice architectures around.

These artworks I quite like it, because there are very creative, and amazing.

Boardgame for Brad

Image 1 shows the board of the game, the second image shows the card design, and finally, the third image is telling the meaning of each symbols.

Objective of the game
To enter to the ball you must dress up and get the ticket.

Playing the game
1. Choose a character to play. Use the matching- colored playing piece to represent you on the board.
2. Each player rolls one dice. The highest number goes first. Play then continues clockwise.
3. When you see two footsteps together like this that means one steps.

4. On your turn, roll a dice and move that number of spaces around the board, trying to reach a space either “M” or “L”. You may get something special which helps you move toward to the final goal. Also trying to reach the shop, as you can start get ready to dress up to the ball.
5. You may only get a magic or lucky card through a space named “M” or “L”, and follow the instruction said on the card or the game board.
6. You can ask other player to trade your item if you got more than one on specific item.
7. Whenever you have bought an item, keep the image of it to show reference
8. When you are already dressed up, then you could move to second level and get the ticket before go to the ball.
9. The shop in the second level only sells tickets.
10. The pathway of 2nd level will be look like this, this represents you have already dressed up.
11. At the beginning of second level. You can choose your way when you see the allow like this
12. You are only allow to buy one item from the shop each time
13. You can get 200 pounds , when you pass the place “HOME” every times

I just started my rendering for Visualisation project... Ive done more than 3 mins... as my design is quite big.. and I want to film it more detailly... hopefully it comes out well.

This is part of my researches, and this kinda influence my final design. This gives me an idea of glass house. I think the design of it is the most important thing, as it can attract more people to look at. As I do this as a boardgame so could be attract more people to play or buy it.

Cluedo wasnt the original idea for my boardgame, I have thought about to do monopoly and battleship. However, I think Cluedo could be expand more than others, that why I've chosen it.

Also as I've done a city for my identity project. I would like to try to make it more realistic, and I know some of the techniques, so when I was making the model, it is quite easy to start off. I used lot of tutorials on the internet. This helps me to learn more techniqes.

I bought a sketchbook for the project. Whenever, ideas come up on my head I just jot it down to show my idea and development.

The first image is my original plan for andy's boardgame. After all the modelling, I have considered to change my plan slightly. As you can see the buildings on the side are not appropriate and too "blocky". I want it to change more destroy and rough, like everything damaged by the dragon.

I experienced a lot on different topic, for example Audio vision, interactive, animation....
3 programs used are Premiere Pro , Flash, and 3ds max.
So happy that I already learned 3 programs, and so far they are easy to use.
I wish I can continue explore more of these programs.
Also I wish I can create more serious and detail character for next 2 yrs.

I just spent couple hours on review the folders in VLP, and also visited the sites which about the Virtual Environment. This is what I have decided to do. Review the projects Ive done for this year, I found out what I like and don't like.
The most attractive bits are the 3d max, and create own character and environment. I wish I could explore more in this area for the futher. To start thinking more deeply about this area, Ive bought the magazine called 3d World. I have looked at all different type of animations, they have giving me ideas, and I understood more about it, and also learn more from the animator.
Im so happy to add bit of animations into the second project.

Today, I have checked my avatar with Andy, just realised it isn't a proper model, so I have to restart again>.<

After an hour or more, the new model have been exist. This is the new model. This time Ive create more quicker than last time, this is because I have get used to the program.

There are something I experienced, that is try to make it simple at the start. If you create too much polygon at the beginning, you may find it hard to continues, and also you will feel stressy as you are not sure which one is which, after you have been edited alot. the lines are linking together or abit messy, so you won't see it as clear as you use to.

So you must start as simple as you can.

This view isn't quite clear, but will upload better version next time.^^

There are some drawings of my environment and avatar underneath. I did some reseaches on the characters and environment by internets and books. Also I went to London last week, because I want my city to be like London or Hong Kong , this kind of busy city, load of buildings, and people. Their building are mostly different shape and modern.

I was working on my identities project 1 on the last couple weeks, and the deadline is coming soon as well. Really have to properly plan my times for my nxt project. As I have times now to start think about my second project. Firstly, is to think of my own logo. So I already did some reseaches on logo, and I have asked myself wot kind of style I like ,etc...

I want to make the logo look more artistic. By making it like tat, I will add printing style or paint splatters in it.

In this Identities project, I've been doing some reseaches on certain areas, for example: Buildings, Trees, chair , coffee table, lights, human bodies, figures, hair styles, and costume.

This morning, I have visited the 3d studio max modeling site (tutorials), I have found out more about how to create an complicate object. The site is quite useful. It shows all the steps and teach you how to begin and create the objects. Also there is some video shows you steps by steps, which is quite useful and organised.

These pictures are I made a screenshot when I was playing vside yesterday. I found out there are some places existed. Thats why I want to make some screenshots and show to peoples. Everytimes when I play the vside, I have keep thinking of my own avaters, and environments. Also I have spent more than 5 hours on sketches last night. This helps out what I need to do for futher developments.

Today is my second days played on vside. I have spent more than 4 hours on it , because I have met some new friends, it makes me to stay longer on the program. Also I have walked around and looked at the environment more deeply. For example, I have realised they have used 2D pictures for the shop cover, I didn't recognise it until I looked closely. The other things I interested are the sea, it is a 3D model. The colours are quite realistic, it is not just a "flat blue blocks" It is actual an uneven surfaces, which makes it looks much better.

I have just setted up my avater in a web site called Vside. I have tried a few times on secondlife, but it isn't working, I was waiting for the confirmation email few days, still haven't recieve it, so I have decided to move on....

But anyways, the vside was absolutely amazing. I was experienced alot from it.Although just spent few hours in it. It helps me start to think more deeply for my environment. This also helps me to think about the second project, thats how to interactive with things.

I have made my own Grantt Chart for Identities project. I found it quites useful. It suchs like a "Diary" or Calendar to show when is my project finish.

New Technologies

I think this "moveable projected display" is going to be use in the future, I believe most people will own this,just like every house of family have tv or computer, I think this is quite useful and easy to use, could be reduce the harm of the environment. For example: reduce the waste of people, plastic,etc...

This piece of technology quites easy to carry around, it could be use for enlarge picture like Map, or tool for children learning. It could be use for drawing, or search information, just like a laptop.
Also this could be use in a "TOMTOM" where to show locations, or any traffic congestions.

Be honest, I think if they still develop the equipment, it could be like a tool for transfer message, there could be a 3d image comes out, or even any large images could be show to people who have that.

The video above is another idea of new technology which could be exist in the future. I think it could be replace the TVs, instead of every households have a "box" at home, it could now be a just a projector to show images, or video.
Also people don't need to go to cinema, they could just staying at home and watch movie.

I have borrowed a lot of books, and try to define the word "IDENTITY". I think the word identity is about someone has been recognised by its image. The image they wish to show people and get attentions.
The most benefits of identity is being seen, and more , being seen to be different. Difference makes you visible and separates your personality from others. Your differential must attract, motivate and propel the instincts of those around you in accordance with you ambitions.

Most organisations are content to believe that their logo, is their identity. But can we use a "logo" to represent a human? Could a logo tells all the information about the person?!

"Successful identity is planned to succeed at all levels of communication." If we all able to communicate with all different people. Does that mean we are succeed?!

This is my previous group for the pixlation project. I was working with Kismet, Kristy and Claire. This wasn't successful because people ain't able to work together, never come up on times, and so on...

The idea of this was about magic ball. We didn't use a tripod so the frames were out of focus and blurry. The storyline wasn't quite clear...

Evaluation of One shot

During the shooting phase, that we are quite lucky that there wasn't too many people walking in front of the camera, so no interruption occur. However, because of the weather which makes the sky abit dull, this could affect the audience watch it, they might become no mood, but as we could edit it, so should be ok. Next times, I might need to take the shoot again...

Overall, the movie works ok, but I think I need to improve it. I expect the background colour would be more darker. It was quite dark when I was using the program, but when I export it, then I seem nothing changed. The sound track was worked well. I like the bit where it becomes quiet at the end.

If I could make any changes, I might have to decide somewhere to take the shot.However,I still think this shot is good. It seems like at the stage. I might need to edit it in photoshop before start putting effects on. As I said before, I wanted to set like a disco, and have disco light effect. I might need to edit the lights to become more colours acrossing to the middle section where most people ice- skating.

The Three Point Lighting Technique is a standard method used in visual media such as video, film, still photography and computer-generated imagery. It is a simple but versatile system which forms the basis of most lighting. The technique uses three lights called the key light, fill light and back light. Naturally you will need three lights to utilise the technique fully, but the principles are still important even if you only use one or two lights.

Key light- This is the main light. It is usually the strongest and has the most influence on the look of the scene. It is placed to one side of the camera/subject so that this side is well lit and the other side has some shadow.

Fill Light-This is the secondary light and is placed on the opposite side of the key light. It is used to fill the shadows created by the key. The fill will usually be softer and less bright than the key. To achieve this, you could move the light further away or use some spun. You might also want to set the fill light to more of a flood than the key.

Back Light-The back light is placed behind the subject and lights it from the rear. Rather than providing direct lighting (like the key and fill), its purpose is to provide definition and subtle highlights around the subject's outlines. This helps separate the subject from the background and provide a three-dimensional look.

Safety- Must use gloves when using lights, and always make sure there is no loose wires. Always check the lights before using them, such as do the light damaged / right direction,etc.
Lay power leads along floor, do not allow them to be raised above it.
Use rubber matting to allow safe movement of people on set and strap down any dangerous wires.
Tell others before you turn on lights.

My feelings on other interactive project!

There are couple of interactive works I have seen, during the surgery lessons.

Mobile phone, sending texts... I found this quite interesting, and ordinary. This is what we usually do everyday, and he could reflect to the real world, is quite amazing.

Spare times .. This is about you choosing an activity when you go out with friends, so on.. She took her images, and then edit them. I think it is quite realistic, and become more personal on this project.

Evaluation for Interactive Project

Overall, the interactive project is quite easy compare with others narrative projects. This may be because it includes the script. I understand how it works so it is easy to get through. The good things are at the end, they worked what I expected, so Im quite happy.

During the process, of course there are some problems occured, for example the button I have made for the game. When I export the game, there are many errors occured. I found out that it is because the script couldn't able to read, as I messed up with the button name, such as "yesbtn1" and then the other button is same in the timeline... haha... how stupid am I?! haha

Anyways, when that is solved.Everythings go fine. I started to insert sound track in.

Improvement- If I could do this again, I properly make somethings more personally. As I think this is my first step work on this program, and now Im more comfortable to work on it, so I wish I could do something more creative. I haven't seach on the net, and saw some works, which I really want to have a try on. For example: a character could move to a box to another box, or even the background could make it move as well.
Overall, I believe I need to change the button to be more 3D or make it as a button instead of just an image .
To be honest, I have tried my best to it, I kept go to surgery everydays, and try to make the animation works.
But there are some problems, that I cudn't upload it to the blog. That is so annoying...

Interactive Narrative ( In the process)

The printscreen on the left is an overviewing of the program of Flash.

Firsly, I have imported all the images I needed, and then put into the timeline.
Which Frames have individual picture.
As I have already edited the images, so doesn't look too odd.
Secondly, I have added texts into each frame.
Then, I have make notes on which images linking together. Also I have thought about which parts of the image to be a button instead of graphic.

After link everything together, then I have looked at the action script, to see if it is working, and if there is any errors in the script I need to figure it out. It is so annoying if you not sure where it is about.....
This is my first time use this program, I was so confuse about the system, dunno where to start..After long time practise, is getting better . Haha...

It could be a story, or anything to comunicate with people / audience.
To tell what is happening or connected series of happenings, whether true or fictitious.
To say what something means, and relate to individual human action, or culture to start off a point and then to story, and become more realistic.

Process of Pixlation

The print screen on the left is showing the process of choosing relevent effects for the project. I have used different effects on different images, and compare them to see which of it have the best view.
I realised that the watercolour one would be good for this project. Because it won't look odd, or anything, and you can still see the image quite clearly, thats why I have chosen it.

After this, I have selected this effect and apply to all the images Ive got.

Interactive project

I have planned to do something like asking people to pick one of the fish tanks in a fish shop, and then the next picture would be to choose one of the fish, and then choose a method to cook. and then lastly, it will show what would it be at the end. Last icon/ frame would be enjoy your food.

To start the project, I have already draw a rough sketch on my notebook and then Edit those images in the photoshop, tried to make them become more cartoonly like the one below

One Shot Film ( Part 2 - editing)

I took the film during daytime. I will make it more like a disco version by adding music to change the mood of the film, edit and add more effects to it.

I will change the background colour to black or darker which I want to give a disco feel to audiences.

I will edit the lights, which tries to make the light come from top to the side then or moving around, like the movement of disco lights.

I have found a music which is more relevant to the film I am making. The music called Symphony.
I have chosen this because it sounds like the way which normally the musical fountains present to people. It is quite strong and powerful.

The image on the left, is the edited version of the image. I did this because I want to outline and make the water and the people who is skating are more standout, so audiences could be more forcus on this 2 parts.

I properly will add title before the movie plays. I decided to call it as Winter Wonderland. The people who skating in the middle section ( across the image) which seems like people dancing in the stage or something.

This is a piece of artwork. This artwork have showed two different views. When you look closer, you can see two people kissing, however, when You look at it in a distance, where you only see one face.
This is one type of illusion, which gives you different views. The artist have used bright colours and different patterns in the image to attract your attention to look at it.

I have looked at someone's blog which shows an object -- - photographys as a visual aesthetic.
I think it is quite memorable, you only take one shot, and then have that moment to keep, remind you the days you have with your friends,etc..

However, the computer communicated with the user via rectangular boxes containing clean black type rendered against a white background. This is an example of how the interface imposes its own logic on media, just need to consider the cut and paste operations, standard in all software running under the modern GUI. This operation renders insignificant the traditional distinction between spatial and temporal media, since the user can cut and paste parts of images, regions of space and parts of a termporal composition in exactly the same way. Also this could be applied to texts, still and moving images, sounds and 3D objects.

This interface comes to play a crucial role in the information society in yet another way. In this society, work and leisure activities not only increasingly involve computer use, but they also converge around the same interfaces.

We was thinking what is the most distraction is. We planned to film next to the Tram stop. One of my mate was like talking on the phone, on the side, there were loads of people walking around, like walking passed or towards ,etc.

Ive took 3 photos, the photo above is the last one I took. It is in good condition with high quality. Those one I took before, are in bad quality, one of them is completely black, may b the chemical is over reacting. The other one , just got a black dot.

Lets talk about the movie we made. Firstly, we have begin with a tree and a box. Me n my mates are sharing ideas, and then start step by step.
